You may not know what a cult is. You may be like me and think you knew what a cult was and had vague ideas of brainwashing plus the healthy dose of documentaries. I can assure you, you don't know what a cult is- or maybe you know it too well.
Cults are on a spectrum. The fact is if you have been in an abusive relationships-you have been in a cult, if you have been coerced by a scam or multilevel marketing scheme- you have been in a cult, manipulated? gas lighted? tricked? These are all the techniques trickling their way up to cults.
I'll be writing more on Voiced about my project but I have been working with mental health experts, sex workers, influencers, cult leaders, members, exmembers, deprogrammers, comedians, and cult therapists to bring this idea to the world: cults can be anywhere.
To start I am creating a documentary and podcast about an Men's Right/ Red Pill cult called MGTOW. They are a group that spew horrible abuse about women and coerce sexually confused men to join their cause. Take a listen to our podcast to hear how it is going:
Episode 1 of Hashtag Cult Podcast: Mgtow Reveals Itself

Podcast Description:
Hashtag cults are groups that signal membership by using a hashtag or keyword. This allows the group to operate on many different sites and makes them difficult to pin point. They use the hashtag model to spread propaganda on a variety of social media sites without having a central account. This is usually because their ideas are offensive or their methods of communicating are abusive and border on website policy violations.
WHAT IS A CULT?
Unbridled control of another person
Here are 3 myths we’d like to dispel about cultic or coercive relationships:
- Myth: Cults exist in a real physical space. Fact: Hashtag cults are proving that you only need to pick up your phone to join a cult
- Myth: There are only a few cults. Fact: There are thousands of cults.
- Myth: Cults are exclusively religious. Fact: Cults can and have rejected religion, cults can and have made up their own supernatural or religious claims, or co-opt religion but that does not define a cult. Brainwashing in cults is so intense that any claim can be made if the members can be primed for it. THERE IS NO SINGLE MODEL FOR CULT BELIEFS, THERE ARE MANY.
