11 Small Things Modern Gentlemen Always Do

We live in a modern world where plenty of women are completely fine without men pulling out their chair or holding the door open for them. We can carry our own groceries, thank you very much! We can also buy our own drinks (though we’ll let you pay from time to time). These days, we really don’t ask for much. But that doesn’t mean chivalry is dead! Women still love gentleman, and the reason is simple: gentlemen treat women (and men) with respect. When it comes to being a gentleman, it’s the little things that make all the difference. Here are 11 small things modern gentlemen always do.

1. A gentleman always makes plans.

Which is to say, you don’t text her night-of and ask her to get a drink. You know she’s busy and she’s a priority to you, which means you plan ahead to make sure she’s part of your week.

2. A gentleman always makes reservations.

It shows you have initiative, you think ahead, and that you’re concerned about your date having a good night (and not eating squeezed in between other people at the bar).

3. A gentleman always shows up on time.

Being on time is common courtesy, and gentlemen are never lax on common courtesy.

4. A gentleman always puts his phone away.

He knows that his time with you is special, and that it’s far more important than staying updated with anybody else via text or social media. The world can wait. If he does need to take a call, he knows to excuse himself politely.

5. A gentleman always offers his jacket.

There’s a reason it’s a classic movie trope. Offering your jacket to a woman who is clearly cold or uncomfortable shows you care and that you’re willing to be a little uncomfortable if it means she’s more comfortable.

6. A gentleman always gives sincere compliments.

Be thoughtful. Don’t just tell her she has beautiful eyes or that she looks good in the dress. And don’t give a compliment if you don’t mean it. A gentleman speaks genuinely – and a woman can tell the difference.

7. A gentleman always sincerely listens.

Ask her questions about herself, listen sincerely to her answers, and remember them. It shows you care.

8. A gentleman always treats people politely — all people.

This means waiters and waitresses. It also means acquaintances, friends and family members. Homeless people asking for money. A gentleman treats everyone with equal respect.

9. A gentleman always stops and offers to help.

Someone’s dropped a huge pile of papers and they’ve scattered all over the place. If you’re in a hurry, the temptation is to let them deal with it themselves. A gentleman, though, always stops and offers his help.

10. A gentleman always gets his date home safely.

Walk her to her car, even if it’s blocks away. If you’re dropping her off, walk her to her doorstep. A gentleman makes a woman feel safe.

11. A gentleman always speaks honestly about his feelings.

He doesn't beat around the bush, and he is willing to have difficult conversations, because he knows you'll grow from them. He's in touch with his emotions and knows what he wants from life.
